It is true that every single day at ocean is different and you most expect nothing about your experience when you go out there to find wild whale sharks swimming every way in the Caribbean waters but we will tell you some things that can help you to have way better chances to find whale sharks and to have a great experience with them.
1. Weather conditions
This is the number one thing that you must check before booking. There are multiple websites to check on the weather during the date that you want to make this trip. One that we can recommend is WINDGURU . The most important thing to see here is the wind speed. Why? because we are going to offshore navigation and when we have strong wind coming waves can get big and ocean will be choppie. This is not the best for experience. It is uncomfortable for you that you maybe not are used to this. Secund to check on is rain. There is nothing about rain that affect to us , is just water right? but whale sharks do not like this. When it rains early in the morning on the whale shark area the fresh water remains at the surface where the whale sharks feeds and they do not like it. This may cause that they sink or just disappear to go to another spot to find food there. So a sunny day and less than 15 knots or 20 km per hour or wind speed will help you a lot to decide when to book for this amazing experience.
2. Best part of the season
We can have whale sharks all year long close to Isla Mujeres in the Mexican Caribbean Sea but we have this whale shark season cancun to swim with them because is when we have more whale sharks and like that we make less impact to the specie. But there is 4-6 weeks when usually we have way better weather conditions, a lot of food for them and way more whale sharks swimming and feeding around. So when is the best time to swim with them in the season? After 15 seasons working with whale sharks we can tell that mid July to Mid August is the main part of this amazing adventure. So if you are visiting México during that 4 – 6 weeks you have way better chances to find lots of whale sharks and swim beside them.
3. Full Moon
Maybe this can be a little crazy for you but the true is that it is proved that we have way more activity in the marine life during the full moon phase. Marine life is super active and everything is connected. Whale sharks feeds from fish eggs in our waters and when there is full moon also we have way more fish spawning their eggs every way and the current brings it to one place and that is the favorite for whale sharks. They have lots of foods floating around in the area so like that there is more attraction for the whale sharks and of course way more chances to find not just one but hundreds of them.
