Whale Shark Tour FAQ

Are whale sharks dangerous?

No. That is why we call them gentle giants. They are not dangerous or curious about swimmers if you respect their space. In almost 20 years of doing this tour we have never had an accident.

Is the whale shark a shark or a whale?

It is a shark, and the biggest fish in the ocean. They can grow up to 60 ft.

When is whale shark season in Isla Mujeres?

From May 15 to September 17 every year, with the best time usually between mid-June and mid-August. Book with a few days of flexibility so we can choose the best day for weather and tour conditions.

How many whale sharks are in the area?

On a very good day we spot around 50 to 100. When we are very lucky we find 200 to 300 in the same area, and the record is about 700 in a single day.

Can I touch the whale sharks?

No. Touching them is not allowed. It is one of the most important regulations of this activity, and we follow every rule to keep our impact low.

Is seeing a whale shark 100% guaranteed?

No. They are free in a massive ocean. We normally find and swim with them about 98% of the time, but it is never guaranteed.

Do you offer refunds or guarantees for sightings?

No. Whale sharks are wild animals and any company that guarantees sightings or refunds pressures its crew to deliver at all costs, which can lead to ignoring marine park rules and stressing the animals. We choose to operate responsibly and ethically, prioritizing your safety, respect for wildlife and compliance with conservation rules.

Can I book a private tour? How is it different?

Yes. A private tour gives you your own boat and crew, with flexibility on time, snorkeling, food and drinks. If you prefer a shared tour, simply book the shared option.

How many people are on board?

A maximum of 10 guests per group plus the crew. Our boats can fit about 16 people, so you will be safe and comfortable.

Do I need to be a really good swimmer?

No. We have life vests and expert guides to help you in the water.

If the tour is canceled for weather, do I get a full refund?

Yes. If the port authority does not allow tours because of weather, you receive a full refund or can change your date. We recommend booking in the first 2 days of your vacation so we can reschedule you if possible.

Can I get seasick? Do you recommend medication?

Yes, if you are not used to the motion of the sea. We recommend taking medication one or two hours before the tour, making sure you are not allergic to it. We do not provide it on board.

Do you provide pickup from hotels in Riviera Maya?

Yes. Share where you are staying so we can schedule an early-morning pickup for an extra fee. It is important to send us that information when you book.

What should I bring?

Long-sleeve shirts or sun-protective clothes, towels, sandals, hats, extra cash for tips, sunblock for after the swim, and sunglasses.

What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel or change the date of your tour up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund or a date change. Changes or cancellations made less than 24 hours before the tour, and no-shows, are not eligible for a refund. If the port authority does not allow tours because of weather, you can change your date or receive a full refund.
